The Rivers Seine and Rhone: A Brief History

The Seine River

The ancient Celtic Parisii tribe inhabited modern-day Paris near the Seine as earl as 250 B.C. They excelled in navigation and trading all the way down to the Mediterranean Sea, building quays and tow paths along the banks. The Romans conquered the Paris basin in 52 B.C., leaving a permanent settlement on the left bank of the Seine called Lutetia, and later, Lutèce. Over the course of the following centuries, the city eventually known as Paris became prosperous, boasting a forum, palaces, baths, temples and an ampitheatre. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, Paris was largely abandoned by its inhabitants and was little more than a ghost town.

While the Sein itself is a peaceful river with a gentle, meandering flow, it has set the stage for a number of tumultuous events in the history of France. In 885 A.D., the Vikings used the Seine to invade France, rowing hundreds of longboats and an army 40,000-strong inland to the heart of the country. And in the height of the Middle Ages, Joan of Arc was martyred in the shoreline city of Rouen after leading the French army in several important victories in the Hundred Years’ Wat. The Seine was a critical crossing in World War II, and the tragic final resting place of many victims of the Paris Massacre in 1961.

In recent years, the Seine River has been the subject of major conservation efforts in France dubbed “Operation Clean Seine.” In 1991, the banks of the Seine in Paris–the Rive Gauche and the Rive Droite–were added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites in Europe.

The Rhône River

The Rhône River has been an important lifeline for Western Civilization dating back to Greek and Roman times. It was the main trade route from the Mediterranean to the heart of ancient Gaul. As such, it helped convey Greek cultural influence to the people living along its banks.

Until the 20th century, navigation on the Rhône was difficult due to fierce currents, floods in the spring, and droughts in the late summer. Before the advent of the steam boat in the late 18th century, passengers traveled along the river in coches d’eau (water coaches) pulled my men or horses on shore. Trade flourished via giant barges which were pulled upstream by as many as 80 horses at a time.

One of the earliest experimental steamboats was built in Lyon in 1783, but regular services did not begin until 1829. Steam vessels strolled down the river at a leisurely 12 miles per hour, and could make the downstream trip from Lyon to Arles in a day.

In 1933, the French government established Compagnie Nationale du Rhône to increase the navigability of the river. Some progress was made, but World War II brought work to a halt. In 1942, Italian military forces occupied southeastern France up to the eastern banks of the Rhône.

After the war and liberation of France, the government started construction once again on a series of locks and canal cuts, improving the flow of the river and generating electricity. Today, about eight percent of France’s electricity is now supplied by the harnessed power of the Rhône.

Lunch and a Show

Everyone loves dinner and show, but sometimes getting evenings free can be rather difficult. So why not do lunch and a show? Here are five great ideas that will give you all the perks of dinner and a show and still have you home before the babysitter’s bedtime!

Dutch Apple Theatre – Annie Get Your Gun! (June 16, 2012)

Come see everyone’s favorite sharp-shootin’ tale of romance and rivalry in the Wild West! Enjoy lunch at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre while watching expert riflewoman Annie Oakley go from backwoods girl to shootin’ star, when she falls for her rival, ace marksman Frank Butler. Hear Irving Berlin songs like: “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better” and “You Can’t Get A Man With A Gun”.

Maryland Crab Feast &  Show (July 19, 2012)

Get ready to feast at Phillips Crab House on 21st Street…  The Original Crab House of Ocean City. You will enjoy a sumptuous Maryland Crab Feast served family style at your table. Come hungry because this truly is a feast fit for a king or queen!

After such a wonderful meal, you will be entertained by an all new live musical stage production for the 2012 summer season entitled “Hot Time! Summer in the City”. It’s a foot stompin’, hand clappin’, belly laughin’ good time as they pay tribute to some of your favorite music from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

Murder Mystery (July 23, 2012)

Step aboard the Moshulu for a murder mystery lunch.

You’re invited to the nuptials of Buzz and Alma, but this is not a typical wedding party. The groom is late for the reception, and Alma is sick and tired of the negative influence of her new father-in-law. Granny can’t remember what year it is, and Alma’s mom is terrified of desserts – including wedding cake. Ike, the wedding coordinator, is determined to keep everything running smoothly, but when a surprise guest makes an appearance, it all falls to hilarious pieces. Be prepared to dance the chicken dance, catch the bouquet or carry out a corpse during this deadly reception.

Shawnee Playhouse – They’re Playing Our Song (July 26, 2012)

Come join us for a buffet lunch at the Shawnee Inn, followed by an entertaining show at the Shawnee Playhouse. They’re Playing Our Song is an endearingly funny and romantic story of an established composer and his relationship with a zany, aspiring young female lyricist. This crazy couple finds that they are romantically drawn to each other but their wildly different personalities and temperaments create many obstacles. Their professional and personal successes and difficulties lead to one hilarious scene after another. Will their attraction for each other overcome the obstacles?

Allenberry Playhouse – The Sound of Music (August 2, 2012)

One of the most beloved movies has been turned into a fantastic play! Come join us for lunch at the Allenberry Playhouse before experiencing the melodious and inspiring true story of the Von Trapp Family Singers. “The Sound of Music” is set against the panorama of the Austrian Alps. Songs to be featured are “Climb Every Mountain,” “Edelweiss,” “Do-Re-Me,” “So Long, Farewell,” and many more. This classic family musical is bound to be one of your “favorite things”!

Join forces to create a destination wish list that gives everyone a taste of their favorites from dining to diversions. Create a contest with rewards for finding the most unique travel destination experiences. Also, establish a family travel budget. Give each child a travel allowance to reduce constant pleas for souvenirs and snacks.
  2. Buy each child their own age-appropriate luggage. Choose kid luggage that is pulled easily or worn as a hands-free backpack. Be sure you can juggle their bag and your own in the event of a mid-travel meltdown. Teach school-age children to be smart travelers. Allow them to create their own packing list and pack their own luggage (with supervision). For infants and toddlers, use individual large zip-locked bags to separate each family member’s clothing. Pack at least two changes of clothing in a carry-on bag. Accidents and travel go hand-to-hand, especially with infants and toddlers. Check out some of the cute, kid-friendly, Disney themed luggage and backpacks at Boscovs.com.
  3. Discuss and practice clearing airport security ahead of time to take the uncertainty out of the process and avoid misbehavior. Check and re-check carry-on bags to ensure there are no tools or toys that could be mistaken for weapons. Be prepared for “owies” with a small first aid kit. Take medications and medical records for chronic illnesses and a current photograph of all young travelers, including teens, in carry-on luggage.
  4. At your destination, stay alert. Child-proof hotel rooms for toddlers—no matter how much you trust your child. Check out companions they meet and the activities they participate in at hotel and cruise ship camps. Know when, where and what teens are up to. Check rooms and baggage. Yes…snoop! Don’t take any chances with current travel security and stringent drug laws. Be safe… not sorry.
  5. When traveling with infants and toddlers, invest in a combination (FAA-approved) car seat/stroller. You would never hold an unrestrained child in an automobile, and holding a baby in an airplane (especially for take-off and landing) is dangerous. If a sudden stop occurs or the flight encounters unexpected turbulence, it is almost impossible to keep a firm grip on a baby in arms.
  6. Chill out! Stay flexible and calm. Children take their lead from you. If you are visibly upset and stressing out, they will meltdown and add more to your stress. When Murphy’s Law rears its ugly head, be prepared with Plan B and even Plan C.

In the words of Hodding Carter, “There are two lasting bequests we hope to give our children, one is roots; the other is wings.” With practice, a healthy dose of patience and a positive outlook, family travel creates memories that last a lifetime and wonderful wings.

Much More Than a Boat Ride

When I think of cruises the first thing that would come to mind is a very large boat with lots of people. Sure there is tons to do onboard, but if you want to see the world, you are going to have to get off the ship. Exploring on your own can be fun, but in an unfamiliar place, self-exploration may seem a little scary. Well never fear, cruise lines have come to the rescue and have started adding optional shore excursions. Norwegian Cruise Line has truly embraced the idea of offering shore excursions and offers various options at 95 different ports of call.

Here are some awesome adventures you can go on while Cruising Like a Norwegain.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Anne Frank House & Scenic Tour: Visit the hidden place where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary and discover Amsterdam with a relaxing panoramic tour. More than 60 years ago, during the Second World War, a Dutch Jewish family remained hidden from the persecution of the Nazis; the youngest daughter, Anne Frank, wrote a diary telling the everyday life of her family forced to hide. This diary became one of the most important documents of the Jewish persecution and the hidden house a testimony of a dramatic part of world history. In 1960 the house became a museum and today, the Anne Frank House is one of the most visited museums in Amsterdam. Due to the small dimensions of the house, the tour will be self guided. During your visit of the Anne Frank house, you’ll have the chance to visit the “Achterhuis”, the back of the house, where Anne’s family hid. In addition, you’ll also to see the exhaustive collection of documents, pictures and drawings that resume the life and time of the young writer. After the visit to the house museum, enjoy a city tour to glimpse the highlights of Amsterdam passing by the main city monuments, among them the Royal Palace, the New Church, the Portuguese synagogue built in 1675, the modern City Hall, the Waterloo square, and Central Station. Of particular interest is the architecture of Amsterdam’s houses – due to lack of space. In the 17th Century, the houses were mostly built narrow, not more than 30 feet wide and characterized by big narrow windows, decorative gable tops, very narrow stairs inside and a pulley outside to transport larger objects to upper floors.

Florence, Italy

In Pisa, you’ll have one hour at leisure to take in the sights or shop in the numerous small stores. You’ll then continue to the popular seaside resort area of Viareggio with free time for dining, shopping or going to the beach to simply laze on a sun bed under an umbrella. The seaside promenade is open to pedestrian traffic only and is lined with elegant shops offering the latest fashions, small boutiques and cafes. Enjoy lunch on your own at one of the resorts, cafes, or restaurants known for fresh seafood. You’ll then be taken to a famous beach, where your stay includes use of the changing rooms, the beach and the swimming pool, and the use of a complimentary sun bed and beach umbrella.

Party on the way home to island music and tasty treats. The ‘Golden Eagle’ will nuzzle her bow or anchor close to shore on one of the finest pink-sand beach you’ll encounter in The Caribbean.
