Top 5 Honeymoon Planning Tips

So you’re getting married! Congratulations!

Happy-Couple

Now comes the stressful part: planning the wedding. There is so much to do and think about before the big day. Just remember that a nice, relaxing honeymoon comes at the end of all of the stress.

Make planning the honeymoon almost as enjoyable as the trip itself by following these five easy tips:

  1. Where to go
Everyone has their own idea of the perfect honeymoon location, but it is important to decide on the location as a couple. Consider making separate lists of ideal spots and then compare your lists to see if any destinations match. Also, be sure to take the time of year into account when choosing a destination if you don’t want to get caught honeymooning in a climate’s “rainy season” or other unfriendly weather.
  2. What to spend
It is important to set a budget when planning your honeymoon. When planning a week long honeymoon couples tend to spend $3,000-$6,000 when everything is included. The average honeymoon costs around $3,000-$4,000.At Boscov’s Travel we offer a Honeymoon Registry where you can ask your friends and family to put money towards your honeymoon in lieu of cash or other wedding gifts. Also, ask about special financing when using your Boscov’s Credit Card.
  3. What to do
You don’t want your whole honeymoon to be scheduled. After all, you are supposed to relax and enjoy yourself after all of the wedding planning stress. However, it is a good idea to plan some things in advance such as spa time, an excursion or special dinner.
  4. Get ready
If you are traveling outside of the country, make sure your passports are updated well before your departure. Travel with copies of your ID and passport photo page in your luggage and also leave copies with a trusted person at home in case one or both get lost in transit. Brides, be sure to get your travel documents (i.e. plane tickets) in your maiden name. If you are traveling shortly after your wedding day, you will not have time to have your name legally changed before your honeymoon.
  5. Get help
Planning your wedding is already stressful enough. Let an expert Travel Specialist help. Not only do Travel Specialists have plenty of experience planning honeymoons, but they are also very knowledgeable about destinations and deals. Stress less and let someone help you book the honeymoon of your dreams.

Where Pacific Dreams Come True

Seductive, exotic and endlessly mesmerizing, French Polynesia is the epitome of paradise

Scattered throughout the South Pacific, French Polynesia is a favorite of honeymooners and couples seeking the ultimate in romance and adventure. If thoughts of calm, neon blue water, coconut palms and indulgent overwater bungalows make you weak in the knees, then this is your Garden of Eden.

Along with overwhelmingly beautiful beaches and jaw-dropping tropical splendor, French Polynesia also hosts some of the world’s most spectacular resorts and spas. And if you’re the type who prefers a change of scenery each day, there are also many intimate, luxury cruise alternatives that sail throughout the Polynesian islands. To assure yourself the most romantic and unforgettable getaway to French Polynesia, be sure to contact your local Boscov’s Travel Specialist to find out which island, resort or cruise best suits you.

The Big Three

For island lovers, a trip to French Polynesia is not just any vacation getaway, but a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Then again, there are just as many reasons for returning as there are islands to explore. First-time visitors should consider exploring the French Polynesia they have fallen in love with in photos and movies—the islands of Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora.

Tahiti

A jewel of the Pacific, Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia and is home to the vibrant capital city of Papeete. Outside Papeete’s cosmopolitan atmosphere of boutique shops and delightful Tahitian, French and Asian restaurants, Tahiti offers a wealth of striking natural beauty, archeological sites, outdoor action, and both white- and black-sand beaches. The island’s mountainous interior is adorned with deep valleys, towering waterfalls, crystal clear streams and fields of tropical flowers. A rugged coastline with shimmering black-sand beaches makes a striking contrast against the glistening azure waters.
Tahiti is ideal for couples and families looking to incorporate both land and water adventure during their stay. For a true taste of the island, it’s recommended that you take some time during the day to visit Papeete’s 155 year old public market, Le Marché. The market is the perfect place to find unique gifts and a wonderful place to sample French Polynesian fare. In the evening enjoy a walk around Vai’ete Square, along the waterfront, where dozens of colorful roulottes, or food wagons, dish out a large variety of island cuisine and desserts. The boardwalk atmosphere is informal and lively, and the setting is not to be missed.
Tahiti also boasts a number of enlightening museums such as the Gauguin Museum (dedicated to artist Paul Gauguin’s life during his years on Tahiti), the Pearl Museum (the only museum in the world devoted entirely to pearls), and the Museum of Tahiti and Her Islands—considered to be one of the finest museums in the South Pacific.

Moorea

Here it is, the island paradise you’ve been drooling over and dreaming about all winter. But be warned, Moorea is the kind of island that will have you kicking and screaming when it comes time to leave.
For many, Moorea is the preferred island of choice as it offers the best of both Tahiti and Bora Bora. Moorea is just a short flight from Tahiti—30 minutes by high-speed ferry—and the close proximity of the two islands allows visitors to conveniently take in both. Because Moorea has been developed to a lesser extent than Tahiti, it retains a more traditional Polynesian atmosphere. The locals and artists who live here take great pride in the island and are happy to share it with visitors. It’s this friendliness, paired with stunning beaches and a wide range of resorts, which makes Moorea a favorite of return vacationers.
While first-time visitors may be happy soaking up Moorea’s unparalleled beauty from the comfort of their resort, there are stunning walks and sacred sites to explore all over the island. A favorite among visitors is the circle-island road that hugs the coastline and is dotted with fruit-tasting stops, pineapple fields, quiet beaches and unique shopping experiences. The island’s surrounding waters are shallow and the lack of strong currents provides an ideal habitat for marine life and all levels of snorkeling. As you can imagine, the waters further out from the island are some of the very best for scuba diving.

Bora Bora

When it comes to romance, no island provides a better setting or more visual magic than Bora Bora. This is the legendary island that has graced countless movies and postcards with its lush, tropical scenery and crystal-clear lagoons. In fact, Bora Bora may be the most romantic island in the world—which is why so many couples are willing to go a little out of the way to witness its fairy-tale beauty and truly luxurious resorts.
Just under a one-hour flight from Tahiti or Moorea, Bora Bora is immediately recognizable as the majestic Mount Otemanu rises from the center of a stunning blue-green lagoon. Palm-covered reef islets circle the illuminated lagoon like a delicate necklace. From the dramatic scenery to the privacy and amenities of the island’s thoroughly indulgent five-star resorts—which feature the overwater bungalows that have become synonymous with it—Bora Bora is the quintessential island vacation where every whim, need and want you can imagine will be filled without hesitation.
At only six miles long, Bora Bora packs in plenty of unparalleled beaches that give way to emerald waters where brightly colored fish and coral gardens greet gentle giant manta rays. On the southern end of Bora Bora’s main island is Matira Beach, one of the most sublime beaches in all French Polynesia. The beach stretches more than two miles and is scattered with coconut palms making for a scene right out of Robinson Crusoe. Don’t miss an opportunity to take a guided Polynesian-style outrigger canoe tour or glass-bottom boat tour over these pristine waters, you’ll be wowed by the abundance of marine life just below the surface.

Much More Than a Boat Ride

When I think of cruises the first thing that would come to mind is a very large boat with lots of people. Sure there is tons to do onboard, but if you want to see the world, you are going to have to get off the ship. Exploring on your own can be fun, but in an unfamiliar place, self-exploration may seem a little scary. Well never fear, cruise lines have come to the rescue and have started adding optional shore excursions. Norwegian Cruise Line has truly embraced the idea of offering shore excursions and offers various options at 95 different ports of call.

Here are some awesome adventures you can go on while Cruising Like a Norwegain.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Anne Frank House & Scenic Tour: Visit the hidden place where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary and discover Amsterdam with a relaxing panoramic tour. More than 60 years ago, during the Second World War, a Dutch Jewish family remained hidden from the persecution of the Nazis; the youngest daughter, Anne Frank, wrote a diary telling the everyday life of her family forced to hide. This diary became one of the most important documents of the Jewish persecution and the hidden house a testimony of a dramatic part of world history. In 1960 the house became a museum and today, the Anne Frank House is one of the most visited museums in Amsterdam. Due to the small dimensions of the house, the tour will be self guided. During your visit of the Anne Frank house, you’ll have the chance to visit the “Achterhuis”, the back of the house, where Anne’s family hid. In addition, you’ll also to see the exhaustive collection of documents, pictures and drawings that resume the life and time of the young writer. After the visit to the house museum, enjoy a city tour to glimpse the highlights of Amsterdam passing by the main city monuments, among them the Royal Palace, the New Church, the Portuguese synagogue built in 1675, the modern City Hall, the Waterloo square, and Central Station. Of particular interest is the architecture of Amsterdam’s houses – due to lack of space. In the 17th Century, the houses were mostly built narrow, not more than 30 feet wide and characterized by big narrow windows, decorative gable tops, very narrow stairs inside and a pulley outside to transport larger objects to upper floors.

Florence, Italy

Pisa & Beach: Stand up straight next to the Leaning Tower of Pisa for a famous photo op, and then spend an hour exploring Pisa. Your next destination is Viareggio, a seaside spot for lunching and shopping. End with a resort swim. Admire Pisa’s famous Field of Miracles where you’ll have time to walk around on your own to see the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. In Pisa, you’ll have one hour at leisure to take in the sights or shop in the numerous small stores. You’ll then continue to the popular seaside resort area of Viareggio with free time for dining, shopping or going to the beach to simply laze on a sun bed under an umbrella. The seaside promenade is open to pedestrian traffic only and is lined with elegant shops offering the latest fashions, small boutiques and cafes. Enjoy lunch on your own at one of the resorts, cafes, or restaurants known for fresh seafood. You’ll then be taken to a famous beach, where your stay includes use of the changing rooms, the beach and the swimming pool, and the use of a complimentary sun bed and beach umbrella.

Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas

Private Island Snorkel: If you know how to swim then we recommend you dive into the snorkel program. You’ll have your equipment all day, so you can snorkel when you feel like it. Swim or wade around in the sandy shallows to check out the many schools of fish and our artificial reef. Or if conditions permit, swim outside the cove and discover deeper water and coral formations. One of our most popular programs, this snorkel experience is perfect for beginners and experts alike. Ask any of the instructors for a free lesson, and then explore the exciting underwater world of NCL’s very own private island.

Hippo Water Slide: The Hippo Water Slide is the world’s largest inflatable water slide in the shape of a hippopotamus. This 40-foot high and 175-foot long Hippo is available at your leisure all day. The Hippo Water Slide is the world’s largest inflatable water slide in the shape of a hippopotamus. Don’t be left out, plunge down this three story slide in an exciting adventure with the whole family. This is an opportunity for thrill seekers or a nice cushy ride for those less daring. This is a fun activity for kids as well as adults.

Phillipsburg, St. Maarten

Golden Eagle Sailaway: Let your cares float away as you cruise on the ‘Golden Eagle’. If you feel like counting the flying fish or watching for dolphins, both can be done from a reclining position on the ship’s nets. Swim in a quiet cove or snorkel or just bob around on a noodle. Party on the way home to island music and tasty treats. The ‘Golden Eagle’ will nuzzle her bow or anchor close to shore on one of the finest pink-sand beach you’ll encounter in The Caribbean. Homeward bound, the crew sets the sails as you listen to great music while enjoying champagne, rum punch, sodas and light snacks.

Victoria, BC, Canada

Victoria by Horse-Drawn Trolley: Let us take you back to another time and experience Victoria at the pace of yesteryear. Your horse-drawn trolley is drawn by two magnificent draught horses dressed in fine harnesses as this guided tour takes you around beautiful Victoria. Let us take you back to another time and experience Victoria at the pace of yesteryear. Your horse-drawn trolley waits, with blankets to keep you warm in the cool evening breeze. The trolleys are drawn by two magnificent draught horses dressed in fine harnesses, and the passenger areas are covered to provide protection in the unlikely event of a summer shower. This guided tour heads out from the pier along the Victoria waterfront and then travels through the historic James Bay residential neighborhood as we wind our way back along the harbor with stunning views of the thousands of lights trimming the Legislative buildings. Note: This is an open-air vehicle and we recommend you bring a jacket. Guests will need to navigate two steps to board the trolley and due to safety concerns, wheel chairs, walkers, strollers and scooters must be left at the departure location.

Could it possibly get any better than a cruise and pre-planned shore excursions? Of course! Book a 2012 cruise by May 13, 2012 and shore excursions for Little Norwegians, 12 years old and younger, are FREE and ages 13-17 years old are 50% off. The Top 5 Romantic Destinations in the World

When you’re in love, there’s a desire to share it with the world—and it’s a big world out there!

Whether you want to shout your love from the peak of a mountain or while snorkeling, our top Travel Specialists know just the place where you can proclaim your adoration.  Based on their own experiences and those of our clients, here are the Top 5 Romantic Destinations in the World…

Maui, Hawaii

Hawaii’s island of Maui has always been synonymous with romance.  Combining the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, Maui has it all for the great romantic escape.  From the artsy boutiques of Lahaina to the 10,000-foot heights of Haleakala—the island’s volcano—Maui combines the best of the big island.  Here you can gasp at waterfalls, trek rainforests, hike in the presence of volcanoes and indulge in every kind of water sport imaginable.  Maui also has perfect weather year-round, so you can save money on your romantic getaway by booking off-season, which is usually September through November.

St. Lucia

Legend has it that Saint Lucia resonates with romance and adventure—which may be the reason why it was chosen by ABC’s The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love for the final episodes.  With miles of gorgeous palm-fringed beaches, unspoiled rainforest and the majestic Piton Mountains, St. Lucia is the sort of island that travelers to the Caribbean dream about—a small, lush tropical gem that remains relatively unknown.  The steep coastlines and reefs here offer superb snorkeling and scuba diving, and the rainforest preserves are one of the Caribbean’s finest for hiking and bird watching.  Not to be missed is the island’s Soufriere volcano, the world’s only drive-in volcanic crater.

Bora Bora

The island of Bora Bora is possibly the single most famous and breathtaking island destination in the world.  Two towering peaks of sheer black rock dominate the center of the island and make an impressive backdrop to the world-famous lagoon.  Lush tropical slopes and valleys blossom with hibiscus, white palm-covered motu circle the illuminated lagoon like a delicate necklace.  White-sand beaches give way to emerald waters where colorful fish and coral gardens greet the giant manta rays.  This could be easily described as the center of the romantic universe, where luxury resorts and spas dot the island with overwater bungalows and thatched-roof villas.

Lake District, Italy

Italian is the language of love in our opinion, so the perfect European getaway for romance has to be the Italian Lake District.  Here you’ll find yourself inextricably drawn to the beauty of lake Garda, Lake Como, Lake Maggiore and even intimate Lake Orta where you can indulge in a lakeside villa, secluded castle or panoramic chapel.  If it’s grandiose you’re after, choose Lake Garda.  This large lake features picturesque resorts including the Riva del Garda, situated on the water’s edge.  Take a trip to the tiny port town of Gargnano with its Villa Feltrinelli, or perhaps drop in on George Clooney at his Villa Oleandra in Lake Como.

Maldives

Perhaps the world’s most romantic long-haul destination, the Maldives are geographic marvel and for most people, the single greatest island experience.  Located 435 miles south-west of Sri Lanka, the Maldives are a series of ancient coral reefs that grew up around the sides of towering prehistoric volcanoes.  The volcanoes have long since sunk into the ocean, leaving behind 1,190 tiny islands of unrivaled beauty.  Of those islands open to visitors, most are only large enough to accommodate one resort.  No matter which resort island you choose, you’ll discover plenty of romance, excellent dive sites, and endless expanses of ocean and sky.

Laniwai, the resort’s full-service spa, features nearly 150 spa therapies and Kula Wai is the only outdoor hydrotherapy garden in Oahu.

Earlier this week we shared a few tips for first-time visitors to Hawaii, so now we’d like to break down the differences between each island and highlight some of its best attractions.

One thing is certain, there is no place on earth quite like Hawaii. The state is comprised of islands rich in unique charm and personality. Choosing an island to visit can be a bit difficult, but with so many options, one of them is sure to stand out as the one for you.

If you plan to island-hop, book your flights between islands in advance. A good rule of thumb is to visit no more than two islands within 10 days, unless you really enjoy a steady change of scenery.

Hawaii’s Big Island: Always growing
You may be surprised to find that Hawaii’s Big Island is still growing. Home to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the most active volcano in the world (Maunakea), it’s one of the most unique destinations on the planet. In addition to the Volcano area, you’ll find cattle ranches in the cool uplands and charming getaways on the Kohala Coast, the island’s premier resort area.

Maui: A little of everything
Maui, or “The Magic Isle”, is bustling with beach towns and tourist attractions, but some parts are so remote one can only travel over them by helicopter. Find resorts for every budget along the western coast or visit the one and only resort in laid-back Hana, located along the rugged eastern coastline. Maui’s beaches are also consistently voted some of the most beautiful in the world.

Molokai and Lanai: The escapist’s dream
The phrase “peaceful getaway” doesn’t even begin to describe these two luxurious islands, tucked away from the hustle of everyday life. A visit to one of these remote islands isn’t for everyone, but that’s exactly what makes them appealing to those who wish to truly get away from it all. In addition to the quiet escape, enjoy golf, fishing and other outdoor adventures.

Oahu: The metropolitan experience and more
Oahu hosts the majority of the Hawaiian population, along with iconic attractions such as Waikiki Beach, the state capital of Honolulu, Pearl Harbor and more. Surf on the legendary North Shore, dance the night away in Honolulu or enjoy great shopping, dining and entertainment in Waikiki.

Kauai: Botanical garden paradise
Kaui, the oldest and lushest of the Hawaiian chain, is known as “The Garden Isle”. It has become famous for its tropical rainforests and white sand beaches. Try a helicopter ride over the island for a stunning view or snorkeling, scuba diving, hiking, mountain tubing, kayaking and more. The island is also a popular film location, having played host to “Jurassic Park”, “South Pacific”, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark”, “Fantasy Island” and more.

We hope this has given you an idea of where you’d like to start exploring Hawaii, but we’ve really only scratched the surface of this one-of-kind state and its diverse, charming islands. Be sure to check back next week for part three: our specialist’s favorite Hawaii activities.

Welcome to Hawaii (general tips)

Welcome to Hawaii

The Hawaiian Islands have something for everyone and every budget. Friendly, free-spirited locals provide a glimpse of Hawaii’s deeply-rooted island culture; while the tropical paradise is a landscape of picturesque beaches, lush greenery, massive volcanoes and tourist-friendly beach towns bustling with boutiques and countless delectable cuisine options.

But with so many options, how do you figure out where to go and what to do? We spoke with Boscov’s Travel Specialist, Susie Roth. Susie and her family have made Hawaiian travel a tradition. With seven journeys under her belt and more planned for the future, it’s safe to say Hawaii is a passion for her. The following information comes from this dedicated fan of the Hawaiian Islands.

When to Visit

Although many people believe there’s no wrong time to visit Hawaii, spring and fall tend to lend themselves toward more favorable conditions. Summer can be crowded, while winter is likely to be more expensive. A moderate rainy season occurs December through April.

How to Get There

You may be surprised to find that although most airlines require a connection from the East coast to Hawaii, Continental Airlines features nonstop, 10-hour flights from Newark to Honolulu.

If a 10-hour flight isn’t up your alley, break up your travel time with a pit-stop somewhere fun, such as California. You’ll want to take off a minimum of nine days from your every-day life for travel and vacation time.

Where to Stay

Aston or Outrigger resorts are two good, affordable options, especially for families. Condos are available for groups interested in having their own kitchen during the stay. Couples may enjoy staying at a Marriott, Hyatt or Four Seasons resort. Also, we’ll be featuring Disney’s new Aulani Resort & Spa, Ko Olina, O’ahu; in an upcoming post, so keep your eyes peeled.

What to Do

Hawaii, for the most part, does not feature all-inclusive resorts like one would find in the Caribbean or Mexico. It’s easy to get around, so guests are encouraged to explore on their own. With the exception of Honolulu, which has public transit, you’ll want to rent a car to expand your search for meals, sightseeing options and nightlife. This provides a wonderful opportunity to save money while enjoying a more intimate cultural experience. Pick up a good Hawaii guidebook detailing the area you’re visiting for fun, often free or inexpensive, things to do.

Check back later for more on Hawaii activities, island features and, of course, Disney’s new Hawaiian resort and spa, Aulani.
