Local Cruise Ports & Boarding Tips

Did you know that you can take a cruise without having to fly to your port to leave? It’s true, and there are a few different options for cruise lines and destinations based on where you want to leave from. Below are the three cruise ports that are within driving distance from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New York, and New Jersey. Below the cruise ports details are some basic tidbits that are good to know while booking and before boarding a cruise.

Cape Liberty Cruise Port, Bayonne, New Jersey

Cape Liberty is not only convenient to get to, (15 minutes from Newark Liberty International Airport, 7 miles south of Manhattan, and off of the NJ Turnpike exit 14A) but offers a great place to start your cruise. The minute you pull up you will be overwhelmed by the views of the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan skyline, and New York Harbor.  You can park in their secure garage for $19 a day, without reservations, where they accept traveler’s checks, credit cards, and cash. Cruise Lines that sail from here include Celebrity and Royal Caribbean. Destinations include Caribbean, Bahamas, Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, Bermuda, and Europe.

Manhattan Cruise Terminal, Brooklyn, New York & Manhattan, New York

With parking available above each of the piers, it is easy to get in and out of either cruise terminal in New York.  Cruise Parking is $30 a night, and for cruises from 10-30 nights there is the standard fee of $300. They accept cash, Visa, and Master Card. Manhattan Cruise Terminal is the fourth busiest cruise terminal in the US, so be prepared for hustle and bustle. Itineraries include Bermuda, Canada, New England, Europe, the Caribbean, and world cruises. Major cruise lines that sail out of here include Carnival, Norwegian, Princess, Cunard, Holland America, Crystal, Silversea, and Seaborn.

Port of Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland

Parking is available at this port for $15 a night in secured long-term lots. You may pay by credit card, cash, or traveler’s checks. This port is a close distance to BWI and Amtrak.  Cruise lines that sail out of here include Carnival, Celebrity, and Royal Caribbean. Itineraries include Bahamas, Caribbean, Bermuda; and New England & Canada.

There is a lot to remember when going on a cruise, but here are some basic tips about what to expect on arrival at your port, and what to take into consideration when booking.

  • If you have a disability of any kind, check in with your cruise line for special boarding options. It is best to do this when booking.
  • If you have booked VIP, are a frequent traveler, or have a luxury suite you may get pushed to the front of the line for check in.
  • If you are a part of a large group, tell the cruise line when you check in. This may help you to board before other passengers.
  • Newlyweds or people getting married while on the ship also frequently have special boarding privileges, so make certain to tell the cruise line at time of booking about any special occasion.
  • Check the cruise lines’ policy on alcohol before you board. Some ships don’t allow you to board with it, and having it may slow down your boarding process.
  • Have your documentation ready when you check in. This typically includes two forms of ID, pre-boarding pass, and a credit card to register for your on-board expenses.
  • Most ships let you on-board approximately 3 hours before sailing. You will typically beat the rush if you get there early.
  • Make sure all travel documents are in your carry on bag.  Do not give the Porter your carry on bag!
  • It’s good practice to tip the Porter at least $1 per bag. They are not paid by the cruise line, so typically they will not be receiving any money from your trip.
