Breakaway on the Breakaway

Last year I shared some impressive details about Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest and most incredible ship. She sets sail on May 12, 2013 from New York City and we couldn’t be more excited!

Breakaway-Aerial

NCL has been slowly releasing more information on this massive, floating fun zone. In addition to The Waterfront, 678 Ocean Place, Breakaway Casino, The Manhattan Room; there is much more included for its lucky passengers.

My favorite thing about traveling has always been the food, so let’s start with all of the great on-board restaurant choices. Besides the six different complimentary dining options on the Breakaway, including O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill, there are also eight different specialty restaurants from a range of cuisine choices.

Breakaway-Cagney

  • Ocean Blue – NCL’s first-ever fine-dining seafood experience brought to you by Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian.
  • Le Bistro French Restaurant – NCL’s signature French restaurant with new Atrium Al Fresco seating options.
  • Cagney’s Steakhouse – NCL’s classic, signature steakhouse perched high atop The Manhattan Room.
  • Teppanyaki – A guest favorite, Teppanyaki is an exciting hibachi-style dinner and show.
  • Moderna Churrascaria – The first Brazilian-style steakhouse at sea, Moderna Churrascaria offers beautiful indoor and outdoor seating options to complement their mouth-watering menu options.
  • Shanghai’s Noodle Bar – The largest noodle bar at sea is the answer to your cravings for a taste of the Orient.
  • La Cucina Italian Restaurant – This colorful piazza-style trattoria offers family style Italian dining on The Waterfront.
  • Wasabi Sushi Bar – Sushi, sashimi and more, artfully presented and prepared as you watch.

Breakaway-Bake-Shop

In addition to all of the great options already mentioned, the Breakaway went a step further and added some extra tasty treats to their menu. Setting sail for the first time in May is Carlo’s Bake Shop, the famous bakery from TV’s “The Cake Boss”. And if you are looking for a way to cool down while indulging your sweet tooth, check out Dolce Gelato; a true mouth-pleaser.

Breakaway-Cirque-Jungle

Believe it or not, Breakaway’s dining options aren’t the only headliners aboard; the entertainment options are out of this world!

The World’s Top 5 Places to Propose

Listen up gentlemen! If marriage is on your mind and you’re looking for someplace memorable to pop the big question, we’ve got you covered with some of the world’s most romantic destinations where you can relax knowing she’ll say “yes”—without hesitation. Based on our travel agents’ own experience and those of their clients, here are the World’s Top 5 Places to Propose…

5. Ring of Kerry, Ireland

ireland-dingle-peninsula
When it comes to finding the perfect backdrop to propose, few settings are as beautiful and magical as those which line the Ring of Kerry on the southwest coast of Ireland. Covering just over 100 miles along the Iveragh Peninsula, the Ring of Kerry is a circular route which boasts magnificent mountain and ocean vistas, along with colorful villages, towns, museums and fun stopping points. The round-trip adventure can be completed in four hours by car, but you’ll want to be able to take at least a full day or longer to explore and soak in the rugged scenery and sites along the way. Even though the route is popular with tour buses, you really should rent a car and travel the route at your own pace. This will give you plenty of time to find just the right setting and allow you to settle your nerves before popping the question.

4. Phuket, Thailand

thailand_5
If you and your soon to be fiancé prefer warmer climates that include dazzling beaches and a fabulous mix of nightlife, then the colorful island of Phuket is for you. Exotic, lush and oh-so seductive, Phuket (pronounced poo-get), Thailand’s largest and most popular island has long been popular with jet-setters, honeymooners, and those “in the know.” Blessed with many of the world’s best beaches and sporting a balmy temperature between 77°F and 93°F year-round, lovebirds flock to this upbeat area of the world for its mile upon sandy mile of coastline which boasts tons of water sports, delectable restaurants and decadent resorts. Phuket is at its best during the dry season which begins in December and usually lasts until March. Our suggestion for the ultimate Phuket proposal: Charter a private yacht for a sunset cruise and dinner in Phang Nga Bay—she’ll be left speechless.

3. Montreal, Quebec

montreal-quebec
If it’s a romantic city backdrop you’re after in your proposal (one particularly close to home), look no further than the sophisticated, yet vibrant metropolis of Montreal—a city so infused with romance, it will sweep you both off of your feet. Head to Vieux-Montréal (Old Montreal), where you can take an evening stroll arm in arm among the historic buildings that basks in an enchanting incandescence—or you could surprise her with a caléche ride (horse drawn carriage) around the city’s hushed streets, both are lovely settings. If you’re a traditionalist and prefer to pop the question while sharing a tender tête-á-tête over the city’s legendary French cuisine, Montreal has your back with many superb restaurants that will set the stage beautifully.

2. Napa Valley, California

sonoma-california
If you subscribe to the belief that food and wine go together like love and marriage, then you won’t be disappointed by whisking your love away to California’s Napa Valley. Home to a large collection of quaint towns and charming villages and you likely already know Napa Valley has a renowned wine and restaurant scene—but it’s the Valley’s splendid natural setting that makes it prime for proposing. If it’s your first time to the Valley, take it slow and head down state route 29 where some of the country’s most well-known vintners are located, including Robert Mondavi, Beringer and Cakebread. First-time visitors should also consider a romantic trip for dinner aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train or hot air balloon ride over the valley’s world-famous vineyards and estates—both make excellent backdrops for sealing the deal.

1. Paris, France

Paris_EiffelTower_Seine_01
Ah, Paris, the City of Lights and love—no surprise it takes our top spot for most romantic proposal destination. While proposing beneath the Eiffel Tower inevitably comes to mind to many love-struck couples around the world, Paris is packed with oodles of other romantic locales for kneeling on one knee. If you’re aiming for an intimate setting, Canal Saint-Martin’s enchanting tree-lined waterway is almost overlooked by tourists in the off-peak months. And the Pont de Arts, a wooden pedestrian bridge leading to the Louvre Museum, offers a postcard-worthy view of the Eiffel Tower in the distance. If you can reserve a table near the windows of the exquisite Maison Blanche restaurant located on the top floor of an old theater near the Champs-Élysées, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Paris and the Eiffel Tower. As well, Paris is filled with beautiful gardens, and all will make an unbelievably romantic setting. Luxembourg Gardens, in particular, is a great spot for couples, and is adjacent to the breathtaking Luxembourg Palace.

Great Eats: San Francisco, California

They say if you want to know what passion drives a city, listen to people’s conversation. In San Francisco, talk is all about the restaurants. The city’s location on the edge of the Pacific Rim draws influence from the many immigrants who have settled here, particularly those from China and Japan who opened many of the city’s first restaurants. In fact, it’s here where Asian-fusion cuisine was born.

While sampling Asian food is a must when in San Francisco, you may want to consider passing on Chinatown and instead head to the multi-ethnic Mission District to indulge your appetite. As the city’s first neighborhood, the Mission District is edgy and artsy, and you’ll find delicious meals in venues ranging from funky new pop-ups to elegant eateries.

Quince – 470 Pacific Avenue

This divine Jackson Square restaurant, housed in a historically landmarked brick and timber building, offers a truly special-occasion-style dining experience. Its menu, created by Chef Michael Tusk (2011 recipient of the James Beard award “Best Chef-Pacific”), features an Italian-inspired menu with some French influences. Quince’s menu selections change to celebrate the seasonal bounty of Northern California and the restaurant even lavishes a four-course dinner menu and a Chef’s Tasting Menu that change nightly. An extensive wine list features a particular focus on Italian reds from Piedmont.

Foreign Cinema – 2534 Mission Street

“Dinner at a movie,” you ask. How good could the food possibly be? Well, if the grilled cocoa-ajwaan kobe bavette steak with truffled potato-celery root puree and Zinfandel butter at Foreign Cinema is any indication—very good indeed. And did I mention the oyster selection is amazing? This is no gimmicky spot at all, but rather white-tablecloth elegant. The films, independent and foreign (with subtitles), are projected on the restaurants courtyard wall for an incredibly romantic atmosphere. Not to be missed is Foreign Cinema’s adjacent bar, Lazlo, which exudes a very cool industrial-chic ambience with unique small plate offerings.

Commonwealth – 24 Mission Street

The Mission District is also home to one of the city’s most buzz-worthy restaurants whose hallmark is producing “serious food in casual surroundings.” Commonwealth’s progressive American cuisine incorporates an array of international ingredients and standout dishes include sea urchin with sweet potato tempura. The restaurant offers a 6-course tasting menu for $65, from which $10 is donated to a local charity.

Mission Chinese Food – 2234 Mission Street

This hip restaurant serves up creative Asian food in a space shared with the old-school Chinese restaurant, Lung Shan. Best described as a “dive” (I mean that in a good way), it’s getting rave reviews from the likes of the New York Times’ Mark Bitman, scores of food bloggers, and even came in #2 on Bon Appetit’s Best New US Restaurants for 2011. Bon Appetit’s restaurant editor, Andrew Knowlton, says, “…it’s worth the wait to get some of the most out-of-this-world creative (and seriously delicious) Sichuan-inspired dishes in America right now. The cumin lamb belly? Fiery and addictive. Warm egg custard with duck confit and sea urchin? Brilliant. Hot-and-sour pork dumplings made to order? Further proof that the runaway success of MCF is no accident…”

Heirloom Café – 2500 Folsom Street

This charming rustic café—think wooden floors, high ceilings and common tables—offers simple, seasonal and very well-prepared food at reasonable prices. It features an open kitchen and its cellar, boasting mature, impeccably sourced wines from California and Europe is its pride and joy. Insiders tell us that the best dish is not on the menu. Ask for the Heirloom Burger, which has Époisses cheese worked into the ground sirloin.

The Celebrity Summit Through the Eyes of a Travel Specialist

At Boscov’s Travel, we’re not just Travel Specialists, we’re travelers! The world is our passion and it’s a pleasure to share the thrill of seeing it with you.

Recently, Louise McCabe, an agent from our Wilkes-Barre location took a cruise to Bermuda aboard Celebrity Cruise Lines’ newly “Solsticized” Summit and would like to share her thoughts on the trip.

Before boarding I knew what to expect from Celebrity as a cruise line; sophistication, yet comfort for all. It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, single or a couple, or even travelling with family of all ages, Celebrity has something for everyone and the entertainment and service is always first-class.

With the Summit recently being “Solsticized” I knew there would be new places to see aboard. With the renovations came new public areas such as the Martini Bar and new dining options. The new Bistro on 5 is a great spot for casual dining and is open for all meals, offering pancake specials at breakfast, and soups, sandwiches and paninis for lunch and dinner. The main dining room was beautiful and had a wide variety of cuisine options. The presentation of the food was also fantastic making the food art in itself. I had a “Personal Dine”, but realized even with the flexible dining schedule it is still best to reserve a dining time.

The Summit also boasts a state of the art spa and fitness center which offers work out classes to stay fit and healthy while on the ship. While aboard, you expect to see a pool and maybe a few hot tubs, but the Summit also has a Therapy Pool. How relaxing is that?

The island of Bermuda is one of my favorites; very safe and always very scenic.  Traveling by myself this cruise, I felt very safe and enjoyed the island even though I was not traveling with anyone.  Meeting new people while dinning and at the pool each day was great and the other travelers were very friendly.

The trip overall was very enjoyable, but the highlight of my trip was definitely dining at the Captain’s Table!!! I loved it!

I would highly recommend this itinerary and ship to everyone! Families, couples, singles, and all-ages family reunions.

For more information or to book your own cruise vacation, contact Louise at the Wilkes-Barre office by emailing bostravwilkesbarre@boscovs.com or by calling 570-823-4141. You can also contact your local Boscov’s Travel Specialist, by emailing travelrequest@boscovs.com or by calling 800-755-8020.

Exploring Vietnam & Cambodia

Vietnam and Cambodia offer many unique historical sites, romantic traditions and a wide range of landscapes to enjoy. Our Exotic Travel Specialist, Susan Blum, recommends an itinerary  featuring a mix of bustling cities, interesting cultural stops and a visit to the region’s uninhabited tropical paradise.

Vietnam
Arriving in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, you are immediately surrounded by streets overrun by motorbikes merging in every direction, horns honking, cyclo-carriages joining the mayhem and street market vendors selling their wares. With such a chaotic welcome, first time visitors to Vietnam may be surprised to discover very friendly people and a countryside of brilliant green rice paddies, incredible beaches and lush rain forests.

While visiting Hanoi, I discovered a tour of the Old Quarter with a cyclo-driver was a memorable and exciting way to explore the maze of old narrow streets. Dating back to the 13th century, some of the alleyways are actually named for the merchants that established themselves in the area more than 800 years ago. Actually the Old Quarter evolved from workshop villages organized by guilds and even today streets are dedicated to a single product or trade.

A highlight of any Vietnam tour is a visit to the Ho Chi Minh Complex where on September 2nd, 1945, Uncle Ho, as he is affectionately called, read the Vietnam Independence Declaration. Rather than live in the elaborate, architecturally French Presidential palace, Ho Chi Minh chose to reside in a simple wooden house on stilts. Surrounded by a garden full of fruit trees and a peaceful fishpond, a visit to this unpretentious house offers a unique view into the life of a man entirely dedicated to his people.

Following Ho Chi Minh’s death, to honor the first president of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, a three-storied Mausoleum was built in beautiful Ba Dinh Square. Nearly every day a long, solemn line of foreign and local tourists, including young school children, wait patiently to enter the mausoleum to view his preserved body. Closed on Mondays, it is worth organizing your trip to Hanoi to include a day you can actually enter the Mausoleum.

In Hanoi, most American tourists also include a tour of Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton), used by the French colonists for political prisoners and later by North Vietnam during the American-Vietnam War. On a lighter note, be sure to attend a traditional water puppet show with performances that reflect the daily life of Vietnamese farmers and historical legends.

A three hour drive north of Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located in the Gulf of Tonkin. Plan at least a half-day cruise through the islands to explore hidden caves and grottos that support floating villages of fisherman. Amazingly, the shallow water of Ha Long Bay sustains 200 species of fish and 450 different kinds of mollusks! Do not miss a relaxing and peaceful excursion on a traditional junk, to view some of the 1600 islands, mostly uninhabited and unaffected by human presence. I can attest that dining on seafood in Ha Long is divine!

The ancient town of Hoi An remains a well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port. The architecture of Hoi An, which is almost entirely of wood, reflects traditional Vietnamese designs and techniques with those from other countries, including China and Japan. Striving to maintain a connection to Hoi An’s beautiful history, the town devotes the 14th day of each lunar month to a “lantern festival” when residents of several streets hang colorful, paper lanterns on their windows and porches. Electric lights, televisions and radios are turned off, creating a warm, romantic glow. Before traveling to Vietnam, I suggest my clients view The Quiet American, filmed in Hoi An in 2000 and staring Michael Caine. For the cerebral, read the book by Graham Greene!

Saigon, also known as Ho Chi Minh City, is the largest city in Vietnam and functions as the economic center for the country. The Reunification Palace, once known as Independence Palace, was both the home and workplace of the President of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Now a museum, for locals the palace marks the end of the war when a North Vietnamese tank crashed its gates in 1975. Touring the building is an opportunity to step back in time where public rooms display sparse but beautiful furnishings in the 1960′s style. Note that I would love to have a copy of the tablecloth in the government dining room! Also worth a look is the basement labyrinth that contains the war command room with huge maps and old communication equipment.

Sixty miles from Saigon, Cao Dai Temple is the center of the Cao Dai sect which incorporates Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, along with elements of Christianity and Islam. Built between 1933 and 1955, this lavishly decorated temple is a nine-story building, part pagoda, part cathedral and part mosque. Fluorescent shades of pink, yellows, rococo walls and mosaic mirrored tiles present a chaotically breathtaking picture. Services are held four times a day and visitors are welcome to watch from a balcony that runs the entire length of the cathedral where photography is allowed. A visit to this temple should be included on every itinerary to Vietnam.

Embracing capitalism, and to promote tourism, the government of Vietnam preserved 75 miles of the long, complex Cu Chi Tunnels, creating a war memorial park visited by tourists from around the world. Visitors are invited to crawl through segments of the tunnels made wider and taller to accommodate larger people, to experience where the Viet Cong soldiers hid during combat as well as the supply and communication routes, hospitals, food and weapon storage and living quarters for the fighters. From a historic and engineering perspective, a visit to Cu Chi should be included on any trip to Vietnam because it represents innovation, human determination and resilience. Continue reading
