Family Fun in D.C. – Historic Thrills For All

A city of unrivaled architecture and influence, Washington, D.C. never ceases to captivate the imaginations and ambitions of visitors from around the globe with its colossal collection of monuments and memorials, museum and tree-lined parks.

whitehouse

Politics aside, Washington, D.C. tells the story of America and the people who have shaped it in ways that equally appeal to both adults and kids.

At the center of it all is the National Mall, and area where many of the city’s most famous attractions can be found, including the U.S. Capitol, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and the U.S. Botanic Garden. Also located along the beautiful mall is the Smithsonian Institution which incorporates the world’s largest museum complex. Among its incredible lineup of museums are the Air and Space Museum, American History Museum, Natural History Museum, and the National Zoo. You’ll find the White House just northwest of the National Mall at 16th and Pennsylvania Avenue, Northwest.

Regardless if you’re staying for a week or a weekend, do make it a priority to see D.C.’s newest addition, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial located in West Potomac Park, southwest of the National Mall. The memorial is quite a fitting tribute, and on that should be experienced by all. Carved from solid granite, the image of Dr. King emerging from the stone reflects the steadfast resolve of an entire generation to achieve a fair and honest society.

Cherry-Blossom

Each season brings new life and activity to Washington, D.C. From the Cherry Blossom Festival in spring to the Independence Day parade and fireworks show on the Fourth of July, and the lighting of the National Christmas Tree in December, there is always a reason to celebrate.

The G Project

What will you do today, for tomorrow? This is the question being asked in a global initiative seeking ideas to generate positive change in the world.

2456b81da0a2b3be1a74ab5b02575324

The G Project, powered by G Adventures and its non-profit foundation Planeterra, encourages people to submit ideas that will help solve social and environmental issues at a local level.

Submissions will be collated and showcased on the G Project website and the four people with the ideas with the greatest potential will be invited to pitch to a panel of high-profile judges in Costa Rica. The person with the idea the judges believe will have the most positive impact will receive a US$25,000 development grant and the backing of Planeterra to bring their project to life.

Participants can register their ideas up until June 3, 2013 in one of four categories: Community, Freedom, Beauty or Knowledge. Entrants must complete a questionnaire identifying the critical need, the impact their idea will have and the feasibility of execution. Opinions on the ideas submitted will be publicly canvassed online and a list of 16 will be announced on June 4, 2013.

A panel of thought leaders, innovators and social entrepreneurs, including Lonely Planet’s Tony Wheeler and Dr. Jane Goodall, will then select a shortlist of four finalists based on a set of criteria that favour small-scale, sustainable ideas that focus on local communities and have a strong social element.

The four finalists will be announced on June 24, 2013 and they will then be flown out to the inaugural Summit in the Jungle in Costa Rica in September. Here they will hone their ideas before pitching them to G Adventures’ founder Bruce Poon Tip and a selection of judges.

“The G Project is more than traveller philanthropy or charitable giving. It’s a unique initiative designed to bring people from different backgrounds together to lead, build and foster positive change all over the world,” says Poon Tip.

“The G Project was devised as a means to help and enable aspiring change-makers to take their idea from conception to action and impact.”

Meet the Panel

• Braulio Dias – Assistant Secretary General of the UN & United Nations Executive Secretary on Biological Diversity
• Jane Goodall – Founder, Jane Goodall Institute; Humanitarian; Primatologist; Conservationist; Author
• Jonathan Tourtellot – Founding Director of National Geographic Centre for Sustainable Destinations; Writer Editor
• Cameron Sinclair – Co-founder, Architecture for Humanity
• Tony Wheeler – Co-founder of Lonely Planet; Traveller; Entrepreneur

• Wade Davis – Explorer-in-Residence, National Geographic; Anthropologist
• Jennifer Adams – Founder & Executive Director of Places We Go; Filmmaker
• Jordan Romero – Youth Health Advocate; Mountaineer; Fundraiser

The winner will be announced on September 24, 2013 at the Future of Tourism event in Toronto, Canada.

Ann Arbor, MI – A Break From the Ordinary

As a traveler, one of the greatest thrills of crisscrossing the globe is being wowed by a city you would normally have written off as nowheresville.  And when that happens, it’s like unearthing a buried treasure and wanting to show everyone what you discovered. That’s pretty much the feeling first-time visitors leave with after experiencing the overwhelmingly charming and shockingly delightful city of Ann Arbor, MI.

When it comes to the ultimate question of What’s there to do?, Ann Arbor holds its own extremely well against cities two or three times its size. Ann Arbor is a rare jewel: a small, friendly town with big city sophistication; a close-knit community with vibrant neighborhoods and a rich mix of cultures; a world-class educational and high-tech research center. As the locals like to say, ‘Ann Arbor is 28 square miles surrounded by reality.”

Getting There

Perfectly proportioned with just the right amount of sights, sounds, tastes and shopping diversions, Ann Arbor makes a fantastic weekend getaway. The city is located about 25 miles from Detroit Metropolitan Airport, is accessible by Amtrak and is within driving distance of cities in the Midwestern  U.S. and Canada. As well, there are many luxury and budget-friendly hotels, and unique bed and breakfasts here to choose from.

Out on the Town

Although geographically small, the Ann Arbor area is perhaps most renowned for its cultural offerings. From exclusive art exhibits to performances by jazz legends, there are abundant arts and cultural offerings. More than 30 independent bookstores, dozens of unique galleries and a variety of top-notch museums—including the newly-renovated University of Michigan Museum of Art—are all within the downtown limits. The Ann Arbor are also offers a bounty of recreational activities for those looking to golf, hike, or cycle, and three metroparks are within a short drive of the city center.

There’s no underestimating the integral role the University of Michigan plays in cultivating the city, shaping its economy, population, and cultural awareness. On Saturdays during the football season, the city is electrified with Go Blue Fever. Even if you’re not a big football fan, the atmosphere throughout Ann Arbor is energized with plenty of shops and restaurants feeding the masses late into the night. Though the city is certainly a college and sports town, Ann Arbor is multi-faceted, having reinvented itself to become a top Midwest food, culture, outdoor recreation destination. Continue reading
