Family Fun at Sea

Creating a family vacation that your whole gang will love can sometimes be nothing short of a challenge – but that doesn’t mean it has to put a drain on you or your wallet.RCI_CocoCay_SnorkelFamily

By cruising, family fun can be found almost anywhere. The possibilities for you to get away from it all, relax and kick back while having a great time are endless. Cruise ships venture to nearly every corner of the globe, from the sun-drenched islands of the South Pacific to the snowy alpine scenery of Alaska and pretty much everywhere in between.

Offering everything from the comfort of cozy cabins and the excitement of bustling deck areas, to all-day buffets, nightly sweets, talent shows, and special programs for the kids, cruise vacations are voyages filled with a boatload of fun and a world of possibilities. From sunrise to sunset and beyond, you will find unique activities tailored to suit just about any cruiser.

Gone are the days of shuffleboard. Now you have your pick of swimming pools, spiraling waterslides, sports decks, scavenger hunts and much more. Oh, and the ports of call you can visit are pretty cool too!

Family Time Well Spent

Just like your family, cruising is always changing and evolving, introducing new out-of-this-world ships, along with new innovative amenities catering to familes of all sizes and ages. If you’re planning a family cruise for the very first time, or if you are a returning cruiser, you couldn’t have chosen a better time to set sail as there are oodles of new ships with great itineraries and amenities to experience.

No matter how old your kids are, the ships of Norwegian Cruise Line are prime for families – and the line’s newest ship, the Norwegian Breakaway, is certainly no exception. The latest expression of NCL’s ever-popular and relaxed “freestyle cruising” atmosphere, the Norwegian Breakaway’s design will offer the best of the line’s current fleet while infusing a variety of new innovations to create the best vacation ever.

On board you’ll find NCL’s largest kids club to date for ages 3-12; and teens will look forward to getting out of bed and heading to Entourage where they can hang with their peers. Even the under two crowd can enjoy special playtime with their parents in a dedicated area.

To keep the kids active, the on board Sports Complex will challenge cruisers to a game of mini golf or to climb the largest ropes course at sea. There’s even a basketball court and an enclosed climbing cage here too. Of course no family-friendly ship is complete without a pool, or two! The Aqua Park offers five multi-story waterslides (no other ship offers that). Add two swimming pools, four hot tubs and water features and you’ve got more ways to have fun than ever. For the younger crowd, the Kids Aqua Park features squirting  Nickelodeon figures and a perfectly sized pool.

Start your planning now as the stunning Norwegian Breakaway will set sail in the Summer of 2013 from New York to the pink-sand beaches of Bermuda, and in the winter to the warm tropics of the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Florida. Continue reading

Breakaway on the Breakaway

Last year I shared some impressive details about Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest and most incredible ship. She sets sail on May 12, 2013 from New York City and we couldn’t be more excited!

Breakaway-Aerial

NCL has been slowly releasing more information on this massive, floating fun zone. In addition to The Waterfront, 678 Ocean Place, Breakaway Casino, The Manhattan Room; there is much more included for its lucky passengers.

My favorite thing about traveling has always been the food, so let’s start with all of the great on-board restaurant choices. Besides the six different complimentary dining options on the Breakaway, including O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill, there are also eight different specialty restaurants from a range of cuisine choices.

Breakaway-Cagney

  • Ocean Blue – NCL’s first-ever fine-dining seafood experience brought to you by Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian.
  • Le Bistro French Restaurant – NCL’s signature French restaurant with new Atrium Al Fresco seating options.
  • Cagney’s Steakhouse – NCL’s classic, signature steakhouse perched high atop The Manhattan Room.
  • Teppanyaki – A guest favorite, Teppanyaki is an exciting hibachi-style dinner and show.
  • Moderna Churrascaria – The first Brazilian-style steakhouse at sea, Moderna Churrascaria offers beautiful indoor and outdoor seating options to complement their mouth-watering menu options.
  • Shanghai’s Noodle Bar – The largest noodle bar at sea is the answer to your cravings for a taste of the Orient.
  • La Cucina Italian Restaurant – This colorful piazza-style trattoria offers family style Italian dining on The Waterfront.
  • Wasabi Sushi Bar – Sushi, sashimi and more, artfully presented and prepared as you watch.

Breakaway-Bake-Shop

In addition to all of the great options already mentioned, the Breakaway went a step further and added some extra tasty treats to their menu. Setting sail for the first time in May is Carlo’s Bake Shop, the famous bakery from TV’s “The Cake Boss”. And if you are looking for a way to cool down while indulging your sweet tooth, check out Dolce Gelato; a true mouth-pleaser.

Breakaway-Cirque-Jungle

Believe it or not, Breakaway’s dining options aren’t the only headliners aboard; the entertainment options are out of this world!

Charting a Course for Adventure – The Value of Cruising the High Seas

Whether you’re a life-long guest at the Captain’s table or just packing for your first sailing, nothing quite compares to the non-stop fun and adventure of cruising. And with so many great ships traveling to fascinating ports of call across the globe, there’s never been a better time to maximize your vacation dollars and say bon voyage!

To make the most of your family vacation or couples-only escape, cruising is the way to go. No other type of getaway offers you the all-inclusive convenience of unpacking once and experiencing multiple destinations, beautiful scenery, wonderful shore excursions, decadent food and a wide array of activities for one price. Want to pamper yourself at the spa while your spouse hits the casino or lounge in the sun reading a book while your family plays basketball? How about attending a wine tasting, yoga class or a dance workshop? You can do all this and much more onboard today’s ships.

Your local Boscov’s Travel Specialist is your best source for learning which cruise line, ship and itinerary best fits your budget. With their knowledge and experience, they can help you find the best value for your vacation dollars, as well as arrange airfare and assist with purchasing travel insurance and any other incidentals you may need.

All About Fun

In need of a vacation that will please everyone in the family? From tots to teens, grandparents to grandkids, there are many cruise lines that cater to the needs of families. Today’s ships have kids covered, incorporating everything from video games and swimming pools, to non-stop day and evening activities. Day and evening children’s programs and kids’ clubs aboard many ships even give parents a chance to sneak away for spa treatments and romantic dinners. And when it’s time to corral the family, there’s plenty of fun to be had exploring a variety of ports and exciting shore excursions.

Families wanting all of this in a vacation will love ships of Royal Caribbean International. From the young to the young-at-heart, Royal Caribbean’s ships like Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas offer something for everyone, including staterooms for nearly every budget. Families will enjoy one of the most fun experiences at sea with delicious dining, spacious accommodations, Broadway-style entertainment and an Adventure Ocean youth program all for one price. On selected ships kids can climb the cruise line’s signature rock-wall, hang-ten on the FlowRider or glide around on an ice-skating rink. While the kids are having their fun, parents can have their own play time and relax by the pool with a cocktail or indulge in the ship’s Vitality Spa with a couple’s massage. With over 261 destinations in 72 countries to choose from, Royal Caribbean can take you virtually anywhere you want to go.

If your family prefers to cruise in style, Celebrity Cruises allows guests to fully immerse themselves in culture and casual luxury while en route to each port of call. Celebrity’s refined suites and modern staterooms, globally-influenced restaurants and pampering services certainly heighten the cruise experience. With 11 decadent ships, one staff member for every two guests, butler services in all suites, and the Celebrity Enrichment program featuring renowned lecturers and unique offerings, cruisers will not be disappointed. Celebrity is also the only major cruise line to call on the Galapagos Islands with the Celebrity Expedition. Kids will find an onboard wonderland just for them. From toddlers to teens, the line’s XClub youth programs are divided by age so kids will always be entertained. And to ensure that every voyage is an enriching one for young travelers, Celebrity has developed an exclusive partnership with Leapfrog Schoolhouse to offer Leapfrog Edutainment.

Revel in Romance

There’s no doubting the fact that few vacation escapes are as romantic as a cruise. And just how romantic you want to make it depends on where you want to travel and the level of accommodations and service you prefer. While most cruise lines have special packages designed for honeymoons, vow renewals and weddings onboard and onshore, there are some standout lines that truly set the scene whether you’re just married or celebrating your 10th anniversary.

Popular with couples and geared to a wide cross section of cruisers, Princess Cruises is prime for romantics of all ages. Princess’ ships are large, lovely, and some of the most attractive sailing the seas. Each ship has multiple dining rooms, one or two alternative restaurants and a 24-hour buffet should you care to truly indulge (and you should). Evening theater and lounge entertainment is superb onboard each of Princess’ ships. Ships offer the line’s innovative Personal Choice Cruising program, an individualized style of cruising that provides a “what you want, when you want” atmosphere of choice and flexibility. More than 100 different itineraries offer travelers the opportunity to cross the globe, with sailings to all seven continents that call at approximately 350 ports. Princess passengers can also enhance their cruise experience through the Adventures Ashore program featuring nearly 4,000 in-port excursions worldwide.

Launched in 2007, Azamara Club Cruises is perfect for lovebirds who want a truly extravagant cruise experience. Azamara’s ships, Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest, are smaller and more intimate, visiting out of the ordinary destinations. The ships offer a superb blend of big-ship features (multiple dining venues, a casino and a generous fitness facility) in a size that contributes to a cozier, more social cruise experience. The lack of kids’ activities and programs finds mainly adults and couples onboard. Azamara’s amenities and services are beyond compare. Butler service is provided in every suite and land excursions are designed to let guests become part of the fabric of life in each destination, instead of merely being an observer. For onboard dining and entertainment pleasure, two specialty restaurants provide the finest cuisine at sea and live entertainment can be enjoyed nightly.

Cruising the Good Life

Ah, the good life—lavish accommodations, five-star cuisine and once in-a-lifetime shore excursions—that’s just what you can expect on many of the world’s most respected luxury cruise ships. Yes, the cost associated with sailing on a luxury vessel can be significantly more than most mass-market lines, but the heightened level of service, comfort, dining and entertainment is certainly worth the price. Many luxury lines have increased the inclusive nature of their fares, offering thousands of dollars in onboard credit. Shore excursions, airfare, beverages and gratuities are often included in the cruise base price.

Radiating warmth and character of a floating country club, the ships of Oceania Cruises harken back to the elegance and prestige of the golden age of cruising. Onboard, Oceania’s ships boast exquisite appointments typically found in palatial estates. Accommodations are equally alluring with rich Wenge walnut paneling, supple designer fabrics and sumptuous residential furnishings. Marina and Riviera are the only ships at sea to feature suites designed and furnished by Ralph Lauren Home and noted interior designer Dakota Jackson. Onboard, the famed Canyon Ranch SpaClub offers not only spa and fitness, but renowned wellness and lifestyle enrichment. Oceania tends to favor longer itineraries and smaller less visited ports. Itineraries are unique in that they call on the perfect mix of must-see and off-the-beaten-path ports. Multiple overnight calls afford an in-depth, enriching destination experience and allow travelers to immerse themselves in the culture of the ports visited.

For a true taste of the good life, it doesn’t get any better than the impeccable ships of Silversea. This is one cruise line where champagne and über sophistication flow freely and nothing is overlooked. Onboard and off board experiences are all about ultra-professional service, sumptuous comfort, and timeless elegance. Silversea’s staterooms are some of the largest at sea and the marble bathrooms (outfitted with Ferragamo and Bulgari bath products) are pure heaven. Silversea’s divine cuisine rivals the best restaurants onshore and is as good as it gets at sea. An impressive selection of wines and spirits is included in the rates, as are gratuities. Silversea’s list of destinations is extensive and includes South America, the Middle East and world cruises. Adventure seekers with refined tastes can even join Silversea Expeditions on luxurious voyages that cross some of the world’s more remote areas like the Polar Circle, Central American jungles and Patagonia.

For more information on these and other great cruise options contact your local Boscov’s Travel Specialist, email travelrequest@boscovs.com or call 800-755-8020.

Much More Than a Boat Ride

When I think of cruises the first thing that would come to mind is a very large boat with lots of people. Sure there is tons to do onboard, but if you want to see the world, you are going to have to get off the ship. Exploring on your own can be fun, but in an unfamiliar place, self-exploration may seem a little scary. Well never fear, cruise lines have come to the rescue and have started adding optional shore excursions. Norwegian Cruise Line has truly embraced the idea of offering shore excursions and offers various options at 95 different ports of call.

Here are some awesome adventures you can go on while Cruising Like a Norwegain.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Anne Frank House & Scenic Tour: Visit the hidden place where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary and discover Amsterdam with a relaxing panoramic tour. More than 60 years ago, during the Second World War, a Dutch Jewish family remained hidden from the persecution of the Nazis; the youngest daughter, Anne Frank, wrote a diary telling the everyday life of her family forced to hide. This diary became one of the most important documents of the Jewish persecution and the hidden house a testimony of a dramatic part of world history. In 1960 the house became a museum and today, the Anne Frank House is one of the most visited museums in Amsterdam. Due to the small dimensions of the house, the tour will be self guided. During your visit of the Anne Frank house, you’ll have the chance to visit the “Achterhuis”, the back of the house, where Anne’s family hid. In addition, you’ll also to see the exhaustive collection of documents, pictures and drawings that resume the life and time of the young writer. After the visit to the house museum, enjoy a city tour to glimpse the highlights of Amsterdam passing by the main city monuments, among them the Royal Palace, the New Church, the Portuguese synagogue built in 1675, the modern City Hall, the Waterloo square, and Central Station. Of particular interest is the architecture of Amsterdam’s houses – due to lack of space. In the 17th Century, the houses were mostly built narrow, not more than 30 feet wide and characterized by big narrow windows, decorative gable tops, very narrow stairs inside and a pulley outside to transport larger objects to upper floors.

Florence, Italy

Pisa & Beach: Stand up straight next to the Leaning Tower of Pisa for a famous photo op, and then spend an hour exploring Pisa. Your next destination is Viareggio, a seaside spot for lunching and shopping. End with a resort swim. Admire Pisa’s famous Field of Miracles where you’ll have time to walk around on your own to see the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. In Pisa, you’ll have one hour at leisure to take in the sights or shop in the numerous small stores. You’ll then continue to the popular seaside resort area of Viareggio with free time for dining, shopping or going to the beach to simply laze on a sun bed under an umbrella. The seaside promenade is open to pedestrian traffic only and is lined with elegant shops offering the latest fashions, small boutiques and cafes. Enjoy lunch on your own at one of the resorts, cafes, or restaurants known for fresh seafood. You’ll then be taken to a famous beach, where your stay includes use of the changing rooms, the beach and the swimming pool, and the use of a complimentary sun bed and beach umbrella.

Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas

Private Island Snorkel: If you know how to swim then we recommend you dive into the snorkel program. You’ll have your equipment all day, so you can snorkel when you feel like it. Swim or wade around in the sandy shallows to check out the many schools of fish and our artificial reef. Or if conditions permit, swim outside the cove and discover deeper water and coral formations. One of our most popular programs, this snorkel experience is perfect for beginners and experts alike. Ask any of the instructors for a free lesson, and then explore the exciting underwater world of NCL’s very own private island.

Hippo Water Slide: The Hippo Water Slide is the world’s largest inflatable water slide in the shape of a hippopotamus. This 40-foot high and 175-foot long Hippo is available at your leisure all day. The Hippo Water Slide is the world’s largest inflatable water slide in the shape of a hippopotamus. Don’t be left out, plunge down this three story slide in an exciting adventure with the whole family. This is an opportunity for thrill seekers or a nice cushy ride for those less daring. This is a fun activity for kids as well as adults.

Phillipsburg, St. Maarten

Golden Eagle Sailaway: Let your cares float away as you cruise on the ‘Golden Eagle’. If you feel like counting the flying fish or watching for dolphins, both can be done from a reclining position on the ship’s nets. Swim in a quiet cove or snorkel or just bob around on a noodle. Party on the way home to island music and tasty treats. The ‘Golden Eagle’ will nuzzle her bow or anchor close to shore on one of the finest pink-sand beach you’ll encounter in The Caribbean. Homeward bound, the crew sets the sails as you listen to great music while enjoying champagne, rum punch, sodas and light snacks.

Victoria, BC, Canada

Victoria by Horse-Drawn Trolley: Let us take you back to another time and experience Victoria at the pace of yesteryear. Your horse-drawn trolley is drawn by two magnificent draught horses dressed in fine harnesses as this guided tour takes you around beautiful Victoria. Let us take you back to another time and experience Victoria at the pace of yesteryear. Your horse-drawn trolley waits, with blankets to keep you warm in the cool evening breeze. The trolleys are drawn by two magnificent draught horses dressed in fine harnesses, and the passenger areas are covered to provide protection in the unlikely event of a summer shower. This guided tour heads out from the pier along the Victoria waterfront and then travels through the historic James Bay residential neighborhood as we wind our way back along the harbor with stunning views of the thousands of lights trimming the Legislative buildings. Note: This is an open-air vehicle and we recommend you bring a jacket. Guests will need to navigate two steps to board the trolley and due to safety concerns, wheel chairs, walkers, strollers and scooters must be left at the departure location.

Could it possibly get any better than a cruise and pre-planned shore excursions? Of course! Norwegian Breakaway Sets Sail May 2013 with an Oceanfront Boardwalk and more!

Norwegian Cruise Line is making waves in the cruise industry with the announcement of their newest ship, Norwegian Breakaway, setting sail in May 2013. We are very excited about the ship’s new features and can’t wait for her to set sail!

Fun innovations include an oceanfront boardwalk, The Waterfront; lined with shops, restaurants and bars, combined with three decks of dining, bars, entertainment, gaming and more. How cool is that? NCL also teases there is a yet-to-be announced outdoor entertainment venue on the horizon, as well as other new dining and entertainment options.

678 Ocean Place will include three expansive, action-packed decks featuring daytime and nightime amusement. There will be 17 dining venues, along with 12 bars and lounges.

Norwegian Breakaway is introducing a new restaurant to their Freestyle Dining concept, Ocean Blu, the line’s first ever all-seafood restaurant, which will include a premium raw bar, along with a separate sushi bar.

Breakaway Casino will offer a healthy dose of excitement, spanning 18,000 feet with a stylish sophistication created by the use rich materials, luxurious ornamental lighting and highly decorative artwork. Guests will have the opportunity to try their luck on more than 300 of the latest slot machines; along with 26 gaming tables featuring poker, black jack, roulette and craps.

The Manhattan Room will be a complimentary restaurant, featuring a dance floor as its focal point. As guests dine on cuisine that reflects the elegant and romantic nature of the room, they will enjoy live music and dancing. The two-story high restaurant will showcase floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows.

If you’ve sailed aboard other Norwegian Cruise Line ships, you’ll be happy to know there are a few past features NCL will be enhancing aboard Norwegian Breakaway.

Due to popularity of the noodle bar on Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Breakaway will feature Shanghai’s Noodle Bar, which NCL brags as being the largest noodle bar at sea. The noodle bar will offer all counter seating around an open kitchen and will serve traditional Chinese noodles, wok-fried dishes and dim sum.

Another guest favorite, O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill, returns on Norwegian Breakaway. This complimentary 24-hour a day neighborhood sports bar and restaurant will serve classic American favorites and comfort food and feature a giant two story television screen, miniature bowling, pool, air hockey tables and interactive games.

A popular hotspot on several Norwegian ships, Bliss Ultra Lounge has been re-designed on Norwegian Breakaway to resemble a true hotspot, similar to trendy New York City clubs. Guests will enter through the LED-lit tunnel to the illuminated bar, LED walls and pulsating dance floor where they can bust a move and dance the night away.

Norwegian’s signature Teppanyaki restaurant will now feature a traditional Japanese rock garden with bamboo plants and bonsai trees to promote a pleasing aesthetic ambiance.

There are many more traditional favorites aboard Norwegian Breakaway, such as Le Bistro, their signature French restaurant and a beautiful Atrium.

Norwegian Breakaway is currently available for booking! Please note space is subject to availability and will sell out fast! We will also have packages available including transfers to the NYC pier from select Pennsylvania towns shortly.
